The McCoy Group, the parent company of Truck Country and Stoops Freightliner-Quality Trailer, was proud to recently help provide basic household items for people in need.
With an eye on potential future expansion, the McCoy Group recently purchased a former hotel located adjacent to the company’s corporate headquarters in Dubuque, Iowa. And while the McCoy Group is a diversified organization with businesses focusing on truck sales/service, transporting goods and selling forestry and heavy construction equipment, entering into the hospitality/lodging business is not currently in the plans.
Instead of disposing of items, McCoy Group leader Greg McCoy reached out to representatives from Resources Unite, a local non-profit organization that focuses on providing assistance to those in need, to collaborate on a plan to donate items from the former hotel.
On May 6, an army of 100 volunteers, including McCoy Group teammates, removed furnishings from the 56-room hotel, which included 75 to 80 beds, dressers, desks, simple kitchen items and wall art.
Resources Unite’s director, Josh Jasper, told the Telegraph Herald newspaper that his organization has had a program in place that help provide furniture to those without essential household items. Prior to the McCoy Group’s donation, Resources Unite had a waiting list of families needing items. “It’s a good opportunity for us to serve a lot of families that have been waiting,” Jasper told the local newspaper. “Pretty much every single day, someone will come into our office saying that they just left a domestic abuse situation and they’re starting over, they’re experiencing homelessness and starting over.”
Jenny Hornsby, the McCoy Group’s marketing director, said it was an easy decision for the company to partner with Resources Unite. “When we purchased the building and everything inside of it needed to go, what better way to give back to the community,” she said. “It was a no-brainer.”
